NFL

We are now through 13 weeks of the NFL season. The best team in football, by record, is the Texans and Falcons. Both teams have 11 wins and 1 loss, followed by the Patriots at 9 wins and 3 losses. The top 10 in the NFL Power Rankings are:

1. Houston Texans
2. Atlanta Falcons
3. New England Patriots
4. Denver Broncos
5. San Francisco 49ers
6. Baltimore Ravens
7. Green Bay Packers
8. Chicago Bears
9. Cincinnati Bengals
10. Seattle Seahawks

On sad news, the NFL suffered a loss to one of their players on Saturday morning. Jovan Belcher committed suicide at the Chiefs' facility after murdering his girlfriend in their home. The Chiefs played the game against Carolina anyway. They won the game 27-21. There has been some debate on whether that was the right thing to do, but it is too late now.

Holiday Traditions

What is your favorite thing about the holidays? It could be getting a break from school, giving and receiving gifts, eating more than you should, or playing in the snow. All of these things are great, but many would agree that the best part of the holidays is being with your family? Millions of families all across the world come together to celebrate the holidays, participating in special, yearly traditions.
Traditions can be something as simple as sitting down to a vast dinner with the family, or something crazy that no other family in the world would think of. Possibly the most popular tradition seen around the holidays is waking up early on Christmas morning to the excitement of children tearing into gifts beneath the tree, left by Santa Claus. No matter what the tradition may be, or which families celebrate which things, there’s no doubt that no matter where you are, there’s always one thing in common with the holidays: family. It’s no surprise that Christmas serves as various importance in different countries, but you may not know that Christmas can be celebrated much differently by people throughout the United States.

Here are various traditions celebrated by families across the U.S., and throughout the world.
  • Arizona celebrates a Mexican tradition called Las Posadas, where families play out the parts of Mary and Joseph searching for somewhere to stay, and then visit friends' and neighbors' homes, admiring Nativity cribs.

  • Polish Americans celebrate Christmas by scattering hay throughout their kitchen, to remind them of a stable and manger. Then, they set two extra places on the table, in hopes that Mary and the Christ Child take their offering of shelter.

  • In Greenland, children go from hut to hut singing songs, while women enjoy the only night that they are waited on by men.

  • In Egypt, Christmas is celebrated on January 7th, where people fast, eating no meat or dairy products for 40 days.

  • Although only one percent of Japan's population believe in Christ, many people respect the beliefs of Christian followers, and decorate stores and homes in bright Christmas lights. A Buddhist monk plays the role of Santa Claus, bringing presents to each Christian household for the children.

Mockingjay

Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Gale has escaped. Katniss’s family is safe. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding.
It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has a hand in the carefully laid plans- except Katniss.
The success of the rebellion hinges on Katniss’s willingness to be a pawn, to accept responsibility for countless lives, and to change the course of the future of Panem.
To do this, she must put aside her feelings of anger and distrust. She must become the rebels’ Mockingjay- no matter what the personal cost.
                                                                                    Mockingjay
                                                                                    By: Suzanne Collins

"Fans will be happy to hear that 'Mockingjay' is every bit as complex and imaginative as 'Hunger Games' and 'Catching Fire.' Collins has kicked the brutal violence up a notch in an edge-of-your-seat plot."
                                                                                                -Entertainment Weekly

"The realism is supplied by Collins' teen characters -- everyday kids thrown into a nightmare not of their making. The grown-ups tend to be plot devices, but they move the action along. 'Mockingjay' won't make much sense if you haven't read 'The Hunger Games' and 'Catching Fire,' but Collins' fans, grown-ups included, will race to the end."

College Basketball

The college basketball season is well underway. The Kentucky Wildcats have started out 4-1. The only loss they have is against the Duke Blue Devils. Kentucky has been led by a new bunch of Freshman, Archie Goodwin, Nerlens Noel, and Alex Poythress. Kentucky's inexperience has been a big factor. They have allowed small schools to stay in the games with them. Calipari has been quoted saying that they have a terrible defense. Which has held true so far this season.

The number one team in the nation is still the Indiana Hoosiers. The top 10 is:
1.) Indiana
2.) Duke
3.) Michigan
4.) Louisville
5.) Ohio State
6.) Syracuse
7.) Florida
8.) Kentucky
9.) Kansas
10.) Gonzaga

Let's all join in Giving Tuesday!

#GivingTuesday is a call to donate to charitable causes after Thanksgiving and holiday shopping
By Martin Rand III, CNN
(CNN) -- Thanksgiving usually means family, food, football and, of course, the kickoff of the holiday shopping season with Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
With so much consumption going on, giving back can easily be overlooked. The 92nd Street Y in New York hopes to change that with its social media movement #GivingTuesday.
#GivingTuesday is not a charity drive to benefit one cause but a call for many organizations and individuals to give to those less fortunate during this time of year, say its organizers. Retailers around the country will host donation drives in stores on Tuesday. Meanwhile, participants with an online presence are soliciting charitable contributions from their social media followers.
"We began thinking about this around the holidays last year, but work truly began in earnest in the spring," said Henry Timms, spokesman for the community center and the movement's mastermind. "What's been so inspiring is how many organizations and individuals have taken up the charge for #GivingTuesday.

Breaking Dawn Part 2

Breaking Dawn Part 2 Premieres a midnight showing on Thursday. It is such a popular movie that some theatres are beginning to show it at 10 pm. If you haven’t already purchased your ticket it may be too late. Many theatres are sold out!

"'Part 2' does it about as well as it can be done. It must be hard for Summit Entertainment to drop the final curtain on a series that has grossed billions, but it bit the bullet, and I imagine fans will be pleased."                                                                                               Review by: Roger Ebert

"If the entire five-part, 608-minutes-all-in running time of The Twilight Saga means anything at all, it is that vampires are the ultimate fairy-tale characters, as this is a story that literally ends happily ever after and forever for all concerned. Anyone who has seen even one of the previous cinematic installments of Stephanie Meyer’s endlessly protracted cross-species love story basically knows what to expect here, and the multitudes who have seen them all will jam theaters the world over in the coming weeks to experience the consummation so devoutly to be wished: the ultimate and imperishable union of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen."

In other news, Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart announced that Kentucky's head coach, Joker Phillips, will not be returning to coach next season. After a 12-23 record in his 3 seasons as coach, he was fired on November 4th. Barnhart says the search for a new coach has already begun.

Epilepsy Awareness Month

Today marks the first day of November. What do you think of when you hear the month November? I think of hot chocolate, holidays, and cold weather. I’m sure that’s what many students think of, but one thing that is rarely heard of is National Epilepsy Awareness Month. Not only have many of you never heard of National Epilepsy Awareness Month, but you probably aren’t even sure what epilepsy is. With the number of epilepsy patients rising, especially in young children and teenagers, it is important for everyone to understand this serious disorder and bring awareness to finding a cure for epilepsy.
What is epilepsy? According to the Epilepsy Foundation, it is a medical condition characterized by recurring seizures affecting a variety of mental and physical functions, brought on when nerve cells in the brain give abnormal signals to the body. However, not everyone who has experienced seizures are considered Epileptic. An epileptic seizure is different from other types of seizures because they are often unprovoked. This means that an epileptic person may have a seizure for no visible reason, as other seizures are brought on by drug abuse, hard hits to the head, and rapidly flashing lights. Although these things can trigger a seizure in someone who is epileptic, some people may have seizures for the same reason and not be considered an epileptic patient. Determining whether a seizure is epileptic or not is very confusing, so let’s just leave that part to the doctors.
Worldwide, nearly sixty-five million people are affected by epilepsy. With those statistics, it’s safe to say that you have met someone with epilepsy at some point in your life, and you probably didn’t even know it.  Epilepsy patients are generally young or very old, but a child who is epileptic may experience violent seizures throughout their entire life, and someone who never had epilepsy may fall victim to it in their later years. Medications and complex treatments have been developed to help epilepsy patients, but the majority of epileptic people do not receive adequate treatment. It is the fourth leading neurological disorder in the United States, but also one of the least understood. Despite how common the disease is (it is estimated that one in three adults know someone with the disorder) or the advanced medications and treatments available, epilepsy cases continue to rise in the United States and throughout the world.
The Epilepsy Foundation officially names November awareness month, and asks for you to get involved in their 30 Days 30 Ways campaign to raise awareness of  epilepsy. This program is designed for everyone to complete different activities for every day of November. The complete list can be found at www.epilepsyfoundation.org/getinvolved. Along with a full month of awareness, the Epilepsy Foundation also hosts a national Walk For Epilepsy on April 20, 2013, where anyone may join or create a walking team, as well as donate to find a cure.
Clearly, epilepsy is becoming a bigger problem throughout the world, and sadly, too many people fail to recognize, support, and bring awareness to finding a cure for epilepsy. Whether you know someone who suffers from epilepsy or not, I encourage you to get involved in the 30 Days 30 Ways campaign, and support epileptic patients. I can’t mention names on a public blog, but there is at least one person in this school suffering from epilepsy. What better reason to get involved than that?

Suicide Prevention

In 2007, there were 34,598 suicides in the United States. This equates to approximately 95 suicides ever day. Suicide is the eleventh cause of death in the United States. Over the past couple of years, there have been a few cases of suicide in our school system. Families have lost loved ones, friends have lost friends, and we have felt the loss that suicide has caused in our community.
Recently, a Canadian teenager, named Amanda Todd, committed suicide. She was bullied heavily by her peers at school and over the internet. She felt alone and helpless; she had no one to go to for help. She ultimately decided that suicide was the only way out, but before she committed suicide, she created a YouTube video telling her story and explaining how she felt. This video has gotten over seventeen million views. Her story has inspired many individuals to talk to someone about their issues and have them resolved through a more appropriate solution.
Demi Lovato has recently come out about some of her depression and other issues she has been dealing with for awhile. She says that she has been depressed and had bulimia. Bulimia is “an illness in which a person binges on food or has regular episodes of overeating and feels a loss of control. The person then uses different methods -- such as vomiting or abusing laxatives -- to prevent weight gain.” She has also admitted to cutting herself in the past. She reached out for help and got it. She has set an example for young teens. Many teenagers have told Demi that she encouraged them to get help by telling her story and not trying to hide her problem.
If you are feeling depressed or suicidal, don't forget that there is always another way out. I know that it may not seem like it, but try to hold on. You can consult a trusted adult about your feelings. If you know someone who is considering suicide, you have to speak up. The worst thing that you can do is keep it a secret. Don't promise your friend that you won't say anything. If you dont say anything then you could regret it if they follow through with their plans. You can tell a trusted adult. That could be a parent, teacher or a counselor.

Remember that there are warning signs in people who are considering suicide.                                               These include:
  • Giving away personal items
  • Change in appearance
  • Talking about death
  • Taking more risks
  • Loss of interest in things that used to be important
  • Making a will
  • Saying goodbye.

World Series

The 2012 World Series has come to an end. The San Francisco Giants are World Champions. The Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers Sunday night in a four game sweep. The Giants had played the come back role throughout the playoffs. The Reds had the Giants down 2-0. The Giants came back and won 3 straight games to win the NLDS. The Cardinals had them down 3-1 and the Giants won 3 straight games to win the NLCS.
The Giants came out of the gate swinging against the Tigers' ace Justin Verlander. With Pablo Sandoval hitting 3 homeruns in game one, the Giants did not look back. The run difference between the two teams was 16-6. (8-3)(2-0)(2-0)(4-3) Pablo Sandoval won the World Series MVP, as well.

Cheese Chasing!

Cheese Chasing is annually held at Cooper's Hills, England. This sport was originally played by the village people of Cooper's Hills, but now people from all over the world take part in Cheese Chasing events. The event was so popular in 2010 that they made an entry fee of £20, this made the people furious. Cheese Chasing starts at the top of the hill where a wheel of cheese is released to roll down and the competitors chase after it. The cheese rolls at approximately 70 mph, which is enough to injure a spectator.

Catching Fire

Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her family and her long time friend, Gale. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol- a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create.
Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she’s afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she’s not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol’s cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can’t prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying.
In Catching Fire, the second novel of the Huger Games trilogy, Suzanne Collins continues the story of Katniss Everdeen, testing her more than ever before… and surprising readers at every turn

“[The Huger Games] is a violent, jarring speed-rap of a novel that generates nearly constant suspense…. I couldn’t stop reading.”

“Brilliantly plotted and perfectly paced…. Engrossing.”

Drinks Being Banned

New York has indeed created a new ban for its citizens. This ban might be a little strange to us and believe me it is to me, but the ban is that restaurants, cafes, and concession can not sell a sugary drink over the limit of sixteen ounces.  This drink ban has been in the paper work since the spring, and the mayor of New York, Michael Bloomburg, finally got the law passed Thursday. The belief of this ban is to help decrease obesity in New York. If this actually works then the drinks and restaurant companies will try to pass this all over the Untied States.

The showing of sugar in each drink.

The selling of sixteen ounce drinks is now illegal in New York, but how long will it take to be illegal all over the United States? The answer, not long. If this works the companies will start to push the ban on to other states, and most states will probably take the offer. One last thing, I have a question for the citizens of the United States, does this take away some of our rights as citizens of the United States of America?

People protesting the ban.

National Suicide Prevention Week

Suicide. It's a subject that is all too often looked over and ignored. This is mainly because suicide is a very touchy subject, and American society tends to try their best to avoid discussing such sad topics. However hard to talk about suicide may be, it still has to be done. That is why the International Association for Suicide Prevention teamed up with the World Health Organization and the World Federation for Mental Health to found what is known as World Suicide Prevention Day. This day is recognized in over forty countries throughout the world on September 10th of every year. The week surrounding September 10th is known as National Suicide Prevention Week, a week in which many organizations, schools, and other institutions bring awareness to the world about this horrible act.
According to a 2010 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 36,000 people commit suicide in the United States every year. By those statistics, someone in the United States commits suicide every fifteen minutes, and about 80 people a day. The World Health Organization has estimated that over 900,000 suicides are committed each year worldwide. Because of this high number, suicide ranks as one of the three major causes of death in the age group 15-44 worldwide. That is 900,000 too many lives being taken each year, when it can be prevented. With this many people committing suicide, most of you probably know at least one person in your life who has committed suicide, self-harms, or has openly discussed or showed signs of being suicidal.
Many people who commit suicide give warning or show signs before doing so, but they are often shunned. American society believes that anyone who openly speaks about suicide are nothing more than "attention-seekers" and do not have the "guts" to do such a thing. This is far from the truth. Think of it this way, if someone honestly wanted to kill themselves, do you think they would tell someone and risk being stopped? Of course not! When someone shows obvious signs of suicidal behavior, or just comes out and says it, they are not seeking attention, but rather asking for help. Throughout my life, I have dealt with three people very close to me go through such thoughts, and every one of them made it completely obvious that they wanted help. So, next time someone says they want to kill themselves, don't just shrug it off. Help them!
Although not all suicides can be prevented, most of them can by taking several precautions at personal, community, and national levels. These precautions include:

  • Reducing access to pesticides, medications, and weapons.
  • Treating people with mental disabilities.
  • Following-up people who made past suicide attempts.
  • Just being there.

If you know or suspect someone who has a history of, or is currently suicidal or depressed, please help them. It is important to know that you can not and should not take the situation into your own hands. The best way to deal with the situation is to tell an adult who can get further help for that person. If you suspect someone may commit suicide, it is crucial that you call an ambulance and anyone who can immediately be of assistance. If you are suicidal yourself, remember that you are not alone and you can be helped!

Remembering 9/11

On September 11th, 2001, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists planned a suicide attack. All 19 coordinators died, crashing two planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, another plane into Pentagon in Virginia and the fourth and final plane into a field in Pennsylvania. They killed 2,973 victims in the process.

The planes that were hijacked were very full. The planes were commercial airlines, American and United Airlines. 246 people filled up the four planes. The fourth plane was crashed as the result of onboard passengers and flight crew battling with the terrorists in attempt to take control of the plane. Later analysis has shown that this plane was en route to either Capitol or the White House. Civialians from 90 different countries were killed September 11, 2001.

When School Becomes Stressful

It's happened to every one of us. Whether we miss a few days of school and get piled up with missed work, or procrastinate until the very last minute, we've all experienced that hair-pulling, agonizing feeling of "I'm never going to get this done." Often, it's appropriate to blame school-induced stress on ourselves, as we tend to say "I'll do it later" over and over, until we realize that super important project is due the very next day. However, there are occasions in which stress is cause by other, non-controllable factors, such as illness, or difficulty in keeping up with lessons. Whatever the cause of your stress may be, it still has a big, negative impact on everything you do, from your attitude, to your grades. Although we can't outrun stress, we can make it manageable.
As you sit on your couch eating potato chips and playing Call of Duty, you suddenly realize you have a book report due in a week, and you haven't even started reading the book! What do you do now? Not only did you completely forget about that super important grade, you also decided to hold off on your science project, as you thought you had plenty of free time to complete it. To most people, this is a very stressful situation. No matter what you do, there will be a few negative outcomes. If you read the book, you'll miss out on your video game. If you miss your video game, you'll be cranky. Once you're cranky, your friends won't want to hang out with you. Then...ok, lets not turn this into a DirecTV commercial. I think you get the point.
Now, you must decide how you'll manage to get everything finished on time. By thinking about how to get out of the situation, you realize you're wasting valuable time that could be spent getting out of the situation What does this do? Add more stress, of course! You eventually decide that you'll never get everything completed on time, and resort to playing more games. As you can guess, this adds even more stress to your plate. Not only do you feel lousy about yourself for being so unprepared, but you worry yourself sick about the horrible grades you know you'll receive. Do you honestly think video games is worth pulling your hair out and failing?
As I stated previously, the above situation is not always the case. You may have been bed-ridden for two weeks with an awful case of the flu. Because you missed so many days of classes, even if you felt like doing your work, you'd have no idea what you are supposed to be doing. Another example of uncontrollable stress is falling behind in class. Take Algebra for an example. Say you don't understand today's lesson, and you're too embarrassed to ask for extra help. In any type of math class, you must often know what you learned previously to solve new material. So, if you don't understand how to do today's work, chances are you won't be lost tomorrow, and so on. It is important that you identify the cause of your stress, to avoid blaming yourself when other factors are to blame.
We all have one serious question: How in the world do you deal with stress? A better question to ask ourselves is this: How do we prevent stress? If we can answer the second question, we won't have to worry about the first. I can't give you a direct method for solving your stressful life, as people deal with stress in their own ways, and all situations must be handled differently. It is wise for you to manage your time in a way which will allow for responsibilities, as well as leisure. Be sure you have all of your work finished at a reasonable time, and write down assignments you may forget. If you miss school, consider asking a friend to get your work for you. If you are having trouble in class, talk to your classmates, and arrange a time for your teacher to give you one-on-one lessons. Always remember, stress can be avoided.

College Football

Picture of the colleges and the states they are in.
The 2012 college football season kicked off this weekend. There were some really good games over the weekend. Starting off was the #8 S. Carolina Gamecocks vs. Vanderbilt Commodores. The game was close throughout. The Gamecocks pulled out the win 17-13. The #1 team in the pre-season poll, USC, took on Hawaii. The game was never close. On the first play from the line of scrimmage, Barkley threw a TD pass. The Alabama Crimson Tide, the number two team in the nation and the defending National Champions, took on #8 Michigan Wolverines. Alabama dominated the game from the opening snap. Bama was very impressive in their opener.

The unranked Kentucky Wildcats played at the 25th ranked Louisville Cardinals this past Sunday. The Wildcats put in a new offense over the offseason. It is a new passing offense, that has a lot of short completions, usually around 3-4 yards every catch. Maxwell Smith threw 35 for 50, with 280 yards passing with 2 TD's. The Wildcats were held to 100 yards of total rushing. The Kentucky defense allowed Louisville's sophomore QB to throw 19 for 21 and 232 passing yards. The Wildcats also allowed 213 total yards rushing.

Overall it was a great opening weekend of college football. I look forward to the opening weekend of the NFL next weekend.
