What to listen to this month - Adelitas Way

If you’ve been listening to rock radio recently you’ve probably heard the two newest singles from Las Vegas based Adelitas Way. “Sick”–currently #11 on the Billboard Rock Charts- and “The Collapse” -#20-  are from there 2011 sophomore album Home School Valedictorian, which has the heavy title of Number 4 on the Hard Rock Album Chart. Don’t let “hard rock” define these guys, though. As well as the stadium anthems and hell raisers, there are also a few ballads tossed in the mix. One you might remember from their first self-titled release “Last Stand.”
Adelitas Way
is made up of singer Rick DeJesus, drummer Trevor Stafford, duo guitarists Robert Zakaryan and Keith Wallen, with Derek Johnston on bass. The band met through mutual friends beginning in 2007 when Rick met Trevor, then in 2009 meeting Keith and Derek and then adding down the street neighbor, Robert. The five guys really hit it off, and, thank goodness, they did.
Adelitas Way
is sure to keep amazing their current fans and any radio listener.
The band will soon be joining Shinedown, Art of Dying, and New Medicine for the Avalanche Tour (March-April).
Sitting down with the Blue Jacket Buzz is Rick Dejesus.
What was it like when you first heard your song on the radio?
It was “Invincible”, and we couldn’t believe it. I remember being in Las Vegas listening to the Vegas rock station KOMP with my girlfriend, who is now my wife, and I looked at her and said, “One day we are gonna have a song on the radio”, so when it happened it was a moment. I was in Las Vegas driving and that same rock station KOMP played “Invincible”.
What made you become interested in music?
I just love everything about it. It’s a part of my life. Even just listening to it puts me in a good place.

How stoked are you about the upcoming Avalanche Tour?
Beyond stoked! We love Shinedown and to watch our band grow feels good. I remember being the first of four bands and now we are direct support for them, it’s a dream come true. It’s also an honor to share the stage with Shinedown.  Brent [Smith, singer of Shinedown] is one of the best singers/performers in music.
Aside from the upcoming tour, what else does
Adelitas Way
have planned for 2012?
2012 is gonna be our best year. We have the Avalanche Tour, and we will release a new single, we are gonna tour nonstop to win over new fans and hang out with our fans. We just wanna destroy it at live shows and continue to grow.
Now to wrap this up with something not so serious: What’s something on your iPod that most people would find surprising?
Let me think. Haha. I love music, so I listen to everything. I love rock music, but every now and then I’ll be at the gym and a FRAY song I really dig will come on. I’d say that or Katy Perry. Haha.

Both albums of
Adelits Way
can be found on iTunes, Amazon and in most CD selling stores. Be sure to keep a listen out for their next single, and fallow/like the guys on twitter/facebook.

Bourbon Battle

Last Friday our boys and girls went up against Bourbon County in the Shoot for the Cure tournament, making for some tough games.
The games started off at , with girls playing first. The first half the girls held on to Bourbon and didn’t let them get too far ahead. At the half the girls were down 18-29.
Right into the first half, Shannon Bretz sinks a 3 point shot followed by a 2 point field goal made by Grace Kiskaden. The girls are still down, 23-32. With left in the third quarter, Megan Bretz goes after a pass to a Bourbon County player ad steals it, sprinting down the court and making a 2 point field goal.
The fourth quarter starts out 29-35.
The next big shot was made by Kiskaden making the game 36-49. Also in this quarter, Hannah Stout, one of Bourbon County’s big players, fouls out by fouling Megan Bretz, but didn’t help the Lady Jackets out too much; the ending score was 38-51.
The lead scorer was Megan Bretz with a total of 12 points.
After the game MVP’s were announced, Grace Kiskaden received the award for Nicholas County.
Coming up next, the boys made sure to have everyone on the edge of their seats!
This team of boys came out and played excellent and made good passes. The first half was very upbeat and went by fast. At the end of the half Dalton “Charby” Pope stole the ball from Bourbon County and made a 2 point field goal making the game 29-31.
Beginning the second half, Austin Allison comes right in and sinks a 2 point shot tying the game up, 31 all. The Bluejackets just keep making their shots and defending against Bourbon County real well. With left in the 3rd quarter, Nicholas County is leading 41-33. At one time, the boys caught a rebound from a Bourbon County attempt and passed nice and clean all the way down the court, ending with D. Pope making a 2 point shot, and also making our spotlight play for the game! Jackets were up at the end of the 3rd quarter, 47-40 after Logan Fryman blocked an attempted shot by Bourbon.
Going into the 4th quarter, the Jackets were drawing fouls like crazy, when nothing was being called the other way, even obvious fouls against Bourbon County weren’t called. After getting past all the calls, the boys got it tied up to 53. The referees finally called a fouled in favor of Nicholas County with left in the game. Howard stepped up to the line and made both free throws, 55-53. Then unexpectedly, Bourbon makes a 3 point shot and the crowd is as rowdy as ever trying to get our boys pumped and to pull through this. Z. Howard is fouled, with 34.3 left in the game, and makes them both! This puts the Jackets in the lead, by one; 57-56. Then, of course, we let Bourbon break right through, making a 2 point shot, then, on the way back down the court, Jordan Bussell was fouled. He made both of the shots, making the game 59-58 with 9.9 left. Bourbon tried to push it down the court but ended up turning the ball over.
MVP of this nail-biter was Logan Fryman.

School Spirit

Do you personally feel like we have school spirit? I don’t. About 3 or 4 years ago I remember the student section at ball games was so incredibly large that it was a challenge to find a spot to sit, or even stand. The fans were on their feet during the whole game, cheering our team on. It's not that we don’t have the people at the games anymore, because we do. It’s that nobody ever yells or gets on their feet to actually cheer on the team.
It’s not just about the spirit, it’s also about helping out our team. When our players see the people in the stands standing and cheering, it makes them want to play harder and more aggressive. Overall, a more rowdy student section would be positive as a whole.
More people would get involved with the school and would make coming to games way more fun and exciting. A better student section isn’t that hard to build. Look at Harrison county or Montgomery county. Those people get their crowds going. If we could get themes going on, and everyone bringing out their loud voices, which I know Nicholas County does not lack, we would get this school going! Just come to the games and yell your little hearts out and cheer. We got this, just stand up and scream.
Welcome back!!!!!!!!! So this week we are still living spirit week throuigh veiwer pictures. That's right! The pictures that YOU sent in or we got from YOU! Here they are!

Cheerleaders

A week ago, I sat down and said that this week’s rant was going to be about the lack of spirit during basketball spirit week. Then during the pep rally at the end of that spirit week I like many others were sitting in the gym watching the pep rally, listening to the band during and watching the cheerleaders perform. Though possibly like others, though hopefully NOT, I was having to listen to someone INSULT the cheerleaders, saying degrading things regarding their intelligence and decision making skills and I wanted to HIT this person.
The Nicholas County Cheerleaders on the whole are EXTREMELY intelligent people who make good decisions. (However there are some people who make... “questionable”… choices, though I’d like for you to show me a person who’s done this on the cheerleading squad).
AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s infuriating to hear someone insult people who are INCREDIBLY talented (the best in our region) and say that they’re stupid. I dare YOU to try to learn a cheerleading routine. It’s not that easy!
So my theory as to why I’ve heard FAR too many people insult the cheerleaders than is right (in my opinion ONE person is WAY too many) is because these people are JEALOUS! They tend to forget that the cheerleaders are subject to the SAME rules as ALL of the other sports teams. If a cheerleader is failing she doesn’t get to compete, so I’d like for you to look at the amount of people in the school who are NOT eligible to compete in a sport OR to go on a field trip. I personally think that it’s INCREDIBLE that the cheerleaders can manage to have SO many people who can compete (I think that if you look at the grade point averages of all of the teams in the school that you’d find that the cheerleaders have the best GPA of all of the sports teams).
On the other hand, I can personally attest to the intelligence of a few of the cheerleaders. You may know Anna Mattox, from our own Bluejacket Buzz staff (she happens to be our editor), then there’s Adrienne Letcher who has shown her intelligence many a time before, but why should ANYONE have to prove to a prejudiced little idiot how intelligent they are, or anything ELSE to someone who can’t see what’s directly in front of their eyes.
Now, however much I would LIKE to give out the name of the person who insulted the cheerleaders, I have too much integrity for that. I have a conscience and I am not going to subject this person to such public humiliation and the retaliation for their idiotic comments that they deserve!!!!
But, this doesn’t just go for the cheerleaders who if I haven’t already mentioned are some of the most hardworking ATHLETES in this school, this applies to everyone. If you’re failing then guess what, you can’t say whether someone’s smart or not. If you’re not some righteous saint, you CAN’T condemn someone for something that you THINK they’re doing! Because good sir, if YOU think that YOU are allowed to make such IDIOTIC statements then guess what I CALL YOU OUT RIGHT NOW, you self-righteous pig! A sinner can’t preach to a choir, and you can’t insult people you don’t even know!
So, I believe what I’ve been trying to say, is simply summed up in something I learned a long time ago:
1.   Be decent to people
2.   Don’t talk about things you know nothing of
3.   Don’t be a jerk
4.   Be a human being
5.   Do unto others as you wish they would do unto you.
Five rules to live by, 5 rules that if everyone went by them the world would be a better place, and then maybe there wouldn’t be so much for me to rant about every other Thursday.
